British Police Threaten To Prosecute and Extradite Americans (Elon Musk too)

This is sort of funny (other than the underlying events being so sad and horrible). They are joking about this, aren't they? I do not think they are. Of course if Harris Walz win in November, those leftists would probably cooperate with British leftists on doing this (if they could get away with it).

Gay Mafia Tyranny Declared Unconstitutional 🤗🏳️‍🌈

Supreme Court majority ruled for web designer who did not want to do web sites for gay weddings.  While there was past persecution and tyranny regarding a florist in Washington State and an ongoing saga for a baker in Colorado--this ruling today was a step in the right direction. The fight is far from over.

People should have the right to not be forced to do things they disagree with. At least not this sort of thing. If you are opposed to gay marriage, you should not be forced to do work for gay marriages.

Alex Jones Is Having A Bad Day

I am a huge free speech rights fan. I believe in the 1st Amendment. I do not believe the 2nd Amendment is to blame for what happened at Sandy Hook. This particular award, for a civil judgment, seems grossly excessive (I think this is only five eight of the families who were plaintiffs)...

But Alex Jones did not have to attack families who children were murdered. Where Alex Jones went is a place I would never go. And as bad as this is financially for Alex Jones (he is almost certainly facing bankruptcy), it is nothing compared to what those families suffered when their children were murdered. So I am not surprised that he got wacked by a jury in a civil case not too far from where Sandy Hook occurred.

A Sad Day for Free Speech: Michael Mann's Defamation Lawsuit Against National Review and Mark Steyn Can Go Forward 👨‍⚖️🏒

Alito Dissent by Law&Crime on Scribd

Justice Alito wrote a dissent on the denial of certiorari (which means the Supreme Court declined to hear the case).  It takes four justices to vote yes to take a case up to the Supreme Court. We don't know what happened behind the scenes (there are a lot of reasons why the Supreme Court declines to take a case) but as Justice Alito noted in page 6 of his dissent:
But as I noted in Brunetti, 588 U. S., at ___ (slip op., at 1) (concurring opinion), the pro-tection of even speech as trivial as a naughty trademark for jeans can serve an important purpose: It can demonstratethat this Court is deadly serious about protecting freedomof speech. Our decisions protecting the speech at issue in that case and the others just noted can serve as a promise that we will be vigilant when the freedom of speech and the press are most seriously implicated, that is, in cases involving disfavored speech on important political or social issues.
This is just such a case...
Sad the rest of the Court did not see it that way. Ok--if there is going to be a trial--have a trial. Just what Mark Steyn recommended from the start.

Pearl Jam: Jeremy

Songfacts: Pearl Jam: Jeremy

Jeremy was not a mass shooterbut a troubled kid who committed suicide. The song still works.

President Trump's speech yesterday was well done.

There is no easy answer to address this problem. Many on the left want to restrict guns as a response, but the sort of restrictions required to end mass shootings (beyond violating the 2nd Amendment) would be so draconian that it would likely cause more harm than good. And guess what, armed citizens do stop mass shooters.  And as noted by CBD at AoSHQ, if you magically removed all the guns you would not magically stop the violence (just change it).

It is not guns and rifles that cause these shootings, it is something else that is deeper and more disturbing. We have Bernie Bros attacking Republicans playing softball. We have the Dayton shooting which involved a Bernie-Warren supporter. We have El Paso and Gilroy, where those shooters were on some sort of twisted white supremacy angle. We have other shootings less about politics than social standing at schools. Then again, there are also shootings motivated by religious extremism.

The motivation often appears secondary, however, to the impluse to grab a gun for notoriety. While it was a girl in the Boomtown Rats song, the vast majority of shooters tend to be male (often young) but in the case of the Scalise shooting and Mandalay Bay Las Vegas shooting middle aged.

We need to stop giving attention to the shooters (stop putting their pictures up and repeating their names). They want individual attention because they are (often) omega losers. They want notarity.  Don't give it to them. I am not supporting 1st Amendment restrictions either. Media can voluntarily show a bit of discretion. You can report a story without glamourizing or drawing attention to the shooter.

The Boomtown Rats: I Don't Like Mondays

SongFacts: The Boomtown Rats: I Don't Like Mondays

President Trump's speech this morning was well done.

As far as these shootings go, the Boomtown Rats nailed it back in 1980 and these shootings have continued on since then. Many on the left want to restrict guns as a response, but the sort of restrictions required to end mass shootings (beyond violating the 2nd Amendment) would be so draconian that it would likely cause more harm than good. And guess what, armed citizens do stop mass shooters.

Catholic University Suspends Dean Over Political Correctness

This is the insane batshit crazy world we have allowed our country to turn into. If you are a public employee or work at a public university or college, you can say whatever you want and how ever vile.  It is fully protected, your job will not be in jeopardy.

William Rainford sends out a tweet that he questions Swetnick's allegations (which by the way are fever dreams, absolutely insane, and beyond being taken objectively seriously)--and he is immediately suspended and chastised by Catholic University. Swetnick may be a victim of of mental illness and hooking up with a corrupt exploitive assclown like Avenatti--but Brett Kavanaugh did nothing to her (by the way she does not even allege he did). Rainford's general observations about the age differences of the accuser and accused are absolutely spot on. You can disagree if you like.

Catholic University can also spare us the pieties about protecting the victims of sexual abuse, the Catholic Church lost its moral authority on that issue sometime ago.  There is nothing wrong with that tweet above. If the school wanted him to clarify this was his opinion alone, fair enough. But to suspend him like this?

I am also sure Catholic University would have done nothing if William Rainford attacked Brett Kavanaugh. The hypocrisy is apparent. I would also be happy if David French defended William Rainford, but I am not expecting much.

Think Tenure Will Protect You? Duke Professor Evan Charney finds out not if you lean the wrong way...

Instapundit: Duke fires this professor but this one at a college in Fresno State got a pass (even with her stunt with the Arizona crisis hot line).  Why is that?

Perhaps David French can explain what is going on?  I do get that the Duke professor was teaching (and the Fresno State idiot was on her on Twitter time). Despite getting lots of federal bucks, Duke is also a private institution. And I do understand David French's arguments on why we need to protect free speech (and agree with them).

Unfortunately Voltaire's position (even if it wasn't exactly Voltaire's) is not the reality anymore. We don't have a level playing field. So the question is how to we get there?  Opining on principles does not do a lot of good unless you fight back too.

BTW, has David French spoken out in defense of Professor Evan Charney yet?

Free Speech vs. Alinsky : Fighting Back in the War of Ideas

As some of you probably know, in the immediate wake of the passing of Barbara Bush, some third rate "professor" at a California public college sent out some vile emails about the Bushes. She also then went the added trolling step of giving out the number of an Arizona crisis line as her own (ha ha, too bad if real people in crisis can't call in). David French, in his usual chidey NRO style, said real conservatives™ don't fight free speech (ok I added the real and the trademark symbol).
Ace of Spades put this in the sidebar headlines in response:
Shocking: The Failing Restaurant Aboard the Cuck Cruise Line Refuses to Update Its Ancient RecipesAs the left keeps taking our right to free speech away, David French will continue reprinting the same column about never doing the same to them. I'd like one of these #FakeNewsIntellectuals to answer the question, one time: If this same trope has not produced positive results as regards our right to free expression the last five years, the last ten million time these pieties have been ritually uttered, what are the odds that this time it will do the trick?
Or is worrying about our ownrights and privileges and Americans something that "True Conservatives" aren't supposed to do? Are we only supposed to worry about the rights of David French's leftwing palz?
The only passion the #FakeNews conservatives show on free speech issues is when a leftist's free speech rights are threatened -- or one of their cocktail circuit pals', like Kevin Williamson and Bari Weiss.
Has David French roused himself to write a single word about Lauren Southern being banned from England for passing out an "Allah is gay" pamphlet? Is she not in The Club? Does England's actions not sufficiently threaten David French's career aspirations to write for a leftist journal?
So I concur with David French, Ben Shapiro, John Nolte, Instapundit, Megan McArdle, and Popehat about the importance of free speech and defending it. Yes, people should generally have the right to be an asshole--although I disagree you shouldn't protected from firing for sufficiently unhinged and dangerous behavior. I would love to see Jarrar get the boot, not over her vile free speech, but over her going that added extra step of posting the Arizona crisis number as she did.  And I know this, had a conservative professor (I am sure there are a handful still remaining somewhere out there in academia) pulled a stunt even remotely like Jarrar's they would have been fired already (and banned from sites like Twitter).

In full disclosure Twitter shut me down for 12 hours last night over a tweet I did months ago saying William Kristol and Evan McMullin should be "dead to us."  I did not mean actually dead and the context of the tweet was the use of the term was obvious, but apparently my tweet was too much for sensitive souls at Twitter because I was chilling Kristol and Deadbeat McMullin's fragile gentle voices. But Jarrar remains on Twitter, presumably with no shut down even though she did that stunt with the Arizona crisis line. That's how "free speech" works now a days.

(Sad) Lewis & Clark Law School Shout Down Guest Speaker: This is what you get for $46,320 a year...

They could have just let the Federalist Society members listen to Christina Hoff Sommers in that class room (or alternatively listen politely themselves and then ask questions and debate her in a civil manner). Unfortunately that is not how campus outrage works any more, you have to shut down any speech you disagree with. It is certainly not liberal (in the classical sense). It is the disruptive protesters who are the fascists.

And shame on the administration for not shutting this protest down. This is nonsense. Free speech does not give a group on campus the right to veto the speech of another group by disruption.

How can these snowflakes even stand attending a school named after two white supremacist, patriarchal, pro genocide, slave owning, land grabbers? Law is so limiting anyway (judges tend to frown if you try tactics like this in real courts), why not go 100 miles north to Evergreen State College? Tuition is way less and they can engage in social justice/primal screaming all the time! I hear enrollment is way down at that school too.
