Did Kamala Harris's Bus go Thump, Thump, Thump over her brother/UBER? ๐Ÿš

LA Times: Awkward

I suppose if Kamala is willing to throw her brother and Uber under the bus, that shows she is independent and not about cronyism (although hurting Uber is often about protecting other crony donors to Democrats and their graft machine).  Personally, I like Uber and like how it and Lyft have knocked out the cab monopolies in cities.  This is still worth a close watch.

Makes family reunions awkward.

It Is Out Of Control: Pedestrians Being Killed By Cyclists in New York City ๐Ÿšถ ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿšด

Little Mabel Jensen was hit by a bicycle in Riverside Park.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has aggressively pushed a bike-friendly agenda, adding about 100 miles of dedicated lanes for cyclists amid a spike in rider collisions, but he’s done little to address the danger that bikers themselves pose.

Since 2011, bicyclists have injured more than 2,250 pedestrians — including at least seven who died — according to stats from the city Department of Transportation and published reports.

We obviously need bike control now in New York City!  ๐Ÿšถ ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿšด

Democrats Destroying Family Farms in Upstate New York

State Senator Pam Helming responds to what a disaster this bill will be for New York Farmers

Most farm workers get paid piecemeal, not by the hour.  Most farmworkers do quiet well. A skilled farm hand can harvest a lot of strawberries, apples, and other seasonal produce--most earn far better than minimum wage. There is no incentive to bust your butt harvesting produce on an hourly pay scale. Farmers operate on thin margins, so they cannot easily pass these costs on to consumers (especially since other states are not as bat shit crazy as New York Democrats). Neighboring states will under cut them.

This bill, which requires paying farm workers minimum wage and time and a half for over time (over 40 hours) also results in less money for farm workers. That is because farmers can't afford to pay them the OT. So guess what, most will go seek work elsewhere.

So this bill hurts family farms. It hurts farm workers. It benefits larger agro businesses who are better able to automate and other states. This is all because New York City and Albany posers have to virtue signal.

Be exceedingly careful when dealing with the police when you have a firearm (or even if you don't)...

I am not excusing the police or blaming the victims in these events (with the exception I see no excuse for the shootings by Officers Noor and Guyger). Each case is its own situation. You can be right (in whole or part), but if you're dead, you're dead. Do not mess around when the police show up (especially if you have a firearm). Make it absolutely clear you are not a threat to officers and follow their instructions.

If you are going to carry a firearm, you better know the law in the state you are in. Take a course from The Law Of Self Defense (or other appropriate firearm training course on state law compliance and safe practices). You want to avoid legal liability and also keep yourself from getting shot. If you are carrying, avoid incidents that could end up getting you shot by the police or prosecuted by some prosecutor looking for a scalp.

Gun control opponents seem to want more incidents like the ones noted above, so they can get more gun control...

Their efforts are widespread and intended to gut the 2nd Amendment. The attacks come from the left pushing stricter and stricter gun control on a state level (where they can) and trying desperately to gain control of the U.S. Supreme Court to push through restrictions via the judiciary on those states who don't share the same sensitivities of California and the Northeast.

We also had the Borderline shooting. California has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, but those regulations did not stop that shooting. That shooter had an earlier disturbing incident in his home which did not result in his guns being confiscated, and then he shot up a bar and killed 12 people (including a sheriff deputy).

Meanwhile we also had a women in Minnesota shot in the pajamas (she was holding a cell phone and had just reported a possible sexual assault she heard) and a cafeteria worker shot in his car (who declared he had a gun to the police). Both cases raise serious issues on the use of deadly force by the police. People are on edge.

How does the rest of the world get such fabulous affordable heath care?

That headline is of course a gross oversimplification and exaggeration. There are some benefits but also plenty of negatives under these various health care systems around the developed world. It is true, however, that in most first world countries, they do have some form of universal health care. How it performs varies widely depending on the system adopted. All these system, however, tend to eat up a considerably smaller percent of gross national product than the United States  The United States spends about 18% of Gross National Product on healthcare each year. In comparison, France spends about 11% of its GNP.

The United States is far from a pure free market system. The US does have socialized medicine (similar in some ways to Great Britain's National Health Service), such as the medical systems for the United States Armed Forces and the Veterans Administration. We have a Canadian health care model in Medicare (Medicare and Medicaid were actually based on the Canadian system).  We have elements of the German/French system in employer funded health care. And of course we have a very flawed Democrat imposed regulatory scheme that made things worse called Obamacare.

The United States care has excellent world class health care, if you can afford it. Frustrating but still very good health care if you are typically insured (with lots of co-pays and self pay and significant financial burdens in worse case scenerios). Poor care if you are under-insured (and the working poor do worse than than those at a poverty level). Our system with its layers of insurance and regulation does increase the overall costs far more than they would in a free market setting.

Leaving the British system aside (which does generally sucks) and the Canadian system (which has some serious flaws), the French and German systems (they are both hardly perfect) do provide fairly decent health care at a much lower percent of GNP than in the USA. Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan follow similar models. How do they do it?  A very good read on the topic is T.R. Reid's The Healing of America. I don't agree with all of Reid's positions, but he does a very good job describing health care systems around the world.  Getting back to how they manage to keep costs under control:

ALL OF THESE UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS STRICTLY REGULATE HOW MUCH DOCTORS AND MEDICAL PROVIDERS CAN CHARGE.

They also do things in France like have your health records portable on a credit card chip (which is very smart actually, it makes record keeping way easier and cheaper). When you go to a French doctor, you hand him your card and your records all pop up. They (for the most part) don't have medical malpractice lawsuits and doctors insurance coverage is considerably less than here. Medical insurance is mostly non profit (sort of like the old Blue Cross Blue Shield). Germany does allow you to obtain private insurance for greater medical services. In France and Germany if you are working, you are directly paying premiums for healthcare (the state pays for unemployed and others). Since there is no fighting over how services are coded, it requires far less staff. Hospitals are typically non-profit too. So that efficiency helps, but it is still just a fraction of health care costs. The biggest thing is...

ALL OF THESE UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS STRICTLY REGULATE HOW MUCH DOCTORS AND MEDICAL PROVIDERS CAN CHARGE.

It is actually transparent. In France, for example, prices for common procedures are listed at doctor's office. They are negotiated each year. Doctors protest they are not getting paid enough (and compared to US doctors they definitely paid less), but that is how they make the systems work.

I am not suggesting we do that. I would prefer going in the opposite direction and allowing a freer, transparent, market driven health care (similar with what you find in plastic surgery and orthodontics, which are typically not insurance driven).Still, there are elements of these other countries systems that warrant a closer look.

Real Climate Change Is Coming To The EPA...

It is going to get a lot chillier!

This is a big deal. Like potentially Ronald Reagan big deal. The EPA is a rogue out of control agency. Things may start dramatically changing. With a conservative shift in the Supreme Court (and in the lower courts) and a change of leadership at the EPA, we might see this agency start to get in line. Here's hoping for that.

Donald Trump and Football Being Soft: Is this an analogy for an over-regulated America?

The NFL, of course, did not voluntarily go to these new concussion and safety rules on their own. They were prompted with medical evidence of serious head injuries with players from repeated strikes. But the question is, did Trump do this spiel stream of consciousness or were these comments intended to make a point on regulation?  My guess it is stream of consciousness, but Trump did make a general connection on America getting soft. Trump comes off as genuine with this type of campaign style. This is why guys like Jeb are blown out by Trump.

Getting back to over regulation.  The problem with a lot of the regulations in this country is they are prompted by a real but often isolated events. A regulatory cure is proposed (often quickly and without a lot of thought, oversight or review).  And while some regulatory action is justified, often the cure tends to be worse than the harm it was meant to correct.

Hillary Clinton Emails: Are we heading for a Constitutional Crisis?

Instapundit and Don Surber: Will There Be A Show Down Between The FBI and Attorney General?

It is almost certain Barack Obama and Loretta Lynch (despite their dislike of the Clintons) will not jeopardize Democrat presidential chances. Ultimately this comes down to whether James Comey had the integrity to make this an issue and demand that a special prosecutor be appointed. Given he was the prosecutor against Martha Stewart and was a Republican who appointed and backed Patrick Fitzgerald as special prosecutor in going after Scooter Libby, you think he would be willing to do this (unlike lower level agents, he could land on his feet just fine if he goes head to head with the President and the Attorney General).
