Asshats of the Day: Father and Son tag team hunter in Long Island

I guess the dad and kid prefer deer being killed by vehicles and starvation. Long Island's problem is too many deer. Hunting is a good thing. God--those two are just insufferable.

The White House Correspondent Dinner

Barack Obama, however, did have this joke:
  • "For many Americans, this is still a time of deep uncertainty. For example, I have a friend — just last year, she was making millions of dollars. She's now living out of a van in Iowa."

Hunger Games: Catching Fire

It is getting good reviews...
The Empire Strikes Back for 2013?

Never let a Rule 5 opportunity slip by, so for Jennifer Lawrence...

Girl, what would Cinna say? Not working.
Much better, even without the fire
Update:
Wombat noted: Jennifer Lawrence missed the after party do to stomach flu. It was not an ulcer.
Catching Fire is hot at the box office...

I caught the movie this weekend.  Very well done.  I recommend it.

Hunger Games: The Second Quarter Quell

A pretty well done fan video.
Ed Morrissey did not care for the film, but he also did not read the books.  This is not great literature.  It
Ed is right that it is derivative and I would not even call it science fiction (the "future" of that world, for all practical purposes, could be twenty years from now).  But it was also original enough to be good.   The work is a hell of a lot better than Twilight (although that is not saying much).

The Hunger Games : Clips, Reviews and Countdown

Rotten Tomatoes Reviews  An 87% freshness average
The Countdown to the Movie
How big will Hunger Games be?
Hollywood Reporter on the film...
Hunger Games set to shatter box office records...
Katniss
This clip showing the meeting between Katniss and Cinna is a lot how I imagined the scene from the book...

I have not seen the movie yet, although the initial reviews look okay.  It opens tonight at midnight.  I read the books.  Author Suzanne Collins does a good job.  For a teenage dystopian series, The Hunger Games is not bad and it is a series you could let your kids read with no problems.  The violence is graphic, but also not trivialized or glorified.  The first book was the best of the series.

The President announces his new exciting entertainment and fitness program for a new America!

I enjoyed the books, so I look forward to the movie.  There are also high speed trains involved so you know the political party in power sponsoring these games must be benevolent.   What political party seems to be obsessed with high speed trains?
Update:  Jonah Goldberg sees the President's SOTU theme in a more classical light...  Andrew Sullivan may agree with him on this (just not in the way Jonah probably intended)
