Orgins of "Licking Into Shape" 🐻

Pliny the Elder coined that phrase:
hi sunt candida informisque caro, paulo muribus maior, sine oculis, sine pilo; ungues tantum prominent. hanc lambendo paulatim figurant.

These are shapeless white flesh, a little bigger than mice, with no eyes or hair; their claws alone prominent. They [= the mothers] lick them gradually into shape.

Tigers 🐯, and Lions 🦁, and Bears 🐻, Oh My!

Not terribly surprising. An adult male Siberian tiger is around 600 lbs. Siberian brown bears (which are essentially a very closely related to American brown and grizzly bears) run around 300 to 550 (they can be bigger, but that depends on the availability of food--which is why Kodiak bears feeding on salmon can be 1500 lbs). Asian black bears rarely exceed 300 lbs. Normally similar sized predators avoid each other, because an injury to a solitary hunter like a tiger would be fatal (it would prevent it from hunting). Bears are ominvores and scavangers. While they do hunt down prey, they mostly live off a variety of food sources and stealing kills from wolves and even tiger kills.

Unless desperate or cornered, I doubt a tiger would risk taking on a bear the same size (unless it could ambush the bear as depicted above). It makes sense, however, that adult tigers would target young bears in the year of two they leave their mothers. They are vulnerable then. While bears do make up part of the tiger diet, it is mostly Asian black bears.

Tigers and lions used to have wide over lapping territories. Some say tigers beat lions one on one, other say lions win. In the wild, I doubt a lion or tiger would fight unless one at the clear advantage (say, a lion with its pride backing him up) or there was no way to avoid a fight.

Giant Ocean Sunfish in Russia fed to the bears...

Ocean Sunfish, or Mola Mola, are an interesting species, the largest of the bony fishes, found around the world in temperate oceans.  They are declining, due to by-catch and being injured by floating trash, than being a targeted species.

Bear in Spain kills hundreds of sheep by chasing them off a cliff...

I am impressed that brown bears and wolves can be found in Western Europe, given the population densities.  If you want to have bears and wolves in close proximity with people, problem predators need to be dealt with.  This particular incident with the bear and sheep seems more bad luck (for the sheep) than anything else. But large predators need to fear humans.

Where to find Grizzly Bears in the Lower 48

With the recent story of an 11 year old boy defending himself and his family from charging grizzly bear in Alaska, you might want to avoid bears. Stories like that make people want to see bears more.

The best opportunity to see wild grizzly bears in the lower 48 is either in or around Glacier National Park in Northern Montana or in or around Yellowstone in Wyoming.  While it is not at all guaranteed to see grizzlies at either park, both parks have a relatively high population of grizzly bears and the bears in those parks (while still potentially very dangerous) are accustomed to humans being around.  There are also lots of black bears in both those parks.

Black Bear or Grizzly? Grizzly Being mistaken for a black bear is dangerous for grizzlies.

I'm your huckleberry...bears loves berries

You can always go to Alaska to see grizzlies too.

Grizzly bears are the same species as the Eurasian brown bearBrown bears, wolves and lynx are doing surprising well in Europe (amazing given, with the exception of Scandinavia, the human population densities are so much higher than the Western U.S. and Canada). Bears, wolves and boars in Italy do face challenges, such as bears being in isolated pockets.  Similar issues are in Spain.

The eight species of bears in the world

CBC News: Oh Canada: The fight to save Bear 148 I know they mean well, but if you really want bears (as a species) to be able to survive in proximity with human beings, you need to be able to cull individual bears who become a problem with human beings.

Maybe this crying about Russian interference with the election might backfire on the Democrats and the Fake News Media...
