Deadline: Larry Kramer dead at 84

Kramer plays were tedious and boring, but I recognized he had to speak out during the AIDS epidemic. Speak out he did. RIP Larry.

Bohemian Rhapsody: A Review

Bohemian Rhapsody is a well done film. I thought the performances, especially Rami Malek's, were excellent (I would not be surprised if Malek wins the Oscar for this). As in most biographical films, it plays a little fast with some of the facts. This film is one that it helps to like the music. Lucy Boynton is also good as Mercury's long time girlfriend, Mary Austin.

It took me a bit to recognize who was playing Queen bassist John Deacon in the movie. Malek and Mazzelo previously stared together as WWII Marines in The Pacific.  Mike Meyer also does a brief role, which I did not recognize until later.

Good for NRO to address this.  I have been hearing this lie repeated again and again by idiots on the left for years. I remember when the AIDS crisis started and Ronald Reagan was not the cause of it and did act to stop it. To blame Reagan for not acting fast enough in response to HIV/AIDS a complete and utter despicable lie.

Correcting the record on Reagan and AIDS:

For the record, Reagan first mentioned AIDS, in response to a question at a press conference, on Sept. 17, 1985. On Feb. 5, 1986, he made a surprise visit to the Department of Health and Human Services where he said, “One of our highest public health priorities is going to be continuing to find a cure for AIDS.” He also announced that he’d tasked Surgeon General C. Everett Koop to prepare a major report on the disease. Contrary to the prevailing wisdom, Reagan dragged Koop into AIDS policy, not the other way around. 

As for Waxman’s recollections about AIDS funding, he does an unusual thing for a politician: He’s forgotten the success he and other Democrats had in convincing Reagan to spend more money. The administration increased AIDS funding requests from $8 million in 1982 to $26.5 million in 1983, which Congress bumped to $44 million, a number that doubled every year thereafter during Reagan’s presidency. 

Finally, the claim that Reagan spoke about AIDS sufferers with “disdain” is simply a smear. Nothing like that ever happened, except maybe in the fictional “The Reagans” miniseries in which Barbra Streisand’s husband played Reagan as a bigot and rube.
In real life—that is to say in 1983, early in the AIDS crisis—HHS Secretary Margaret Heckler (accompanied by New York City Mayor Ed Koch, another Larry Kramer target), went to the hospital bedside of a 40-year-old AIDS patient named Peter Justice. Heckler, a devout Catholic, held the dying man’s hand, both out of compassion and to allay fears about how the disease was spread. 

“We ought to be comforting the sick,” said Ronald Reagan’s top-ranking health official, “rather than afflicting them and making them a class of outcasts.” 

“I’m delighted she’s here,” Justice said. “I’m delighted she cares.”

Hillary Clinton actually spoke the truth about this (imagine that) until the leftist Gay Mafia went nuts.  

Ronald Reagan was the scapegoat for many on the left for the AIDS crisis. AIDS was the price of promiscuity.   Robert Heinlein's TANSTAAFL applies to this to: There aint no such thing as a free lunch or free love. When public health officials tried to close gay bathhouses and sex clubs and promote safe sex practices, they were accused of homophobia.

AIDS is now a serious but cronic condition (at least in most of the West).  But we are seeing the denial all over again with opioid drug addiction. Drug overdoses kill more people now than automobile accidents, guns, AIDS at its peak.

When it is acknowledged thousand of girls were abused by Pakistani Rape Gangs

why is noting that Sharia law contributed to the abuse wrong? 

The perpetrators were a small portion of the larger Pakistani community and white political leaders and social workers looked the other way.  Okay, then people should not have a problem prosecuting those who committed crimes and holding those responsible for covering up for them.  So far, no one has been disciplined for failure to stop the abuse.

Other forms of prejudice seem okay in England today.  And if you protest how things are going, they may target you.  

There have been conflicts between the English Defense League and the neo-Nazi National Front in Rotherham, but how about addressing the underlying sexual abuse issue? Could this double standard explain the growing anti immigration backlash in Europe?

Can the media cover up/downplaying that allowed Rotherham to go on so long happen in the USA? Perhaps. There is a group that gets selective coverage by the media when it comes to the sexual abuse of under aged kids: TOM: HIV infected music teacher arrested for sex with 15 year old boy.

Beyond being wrong, it is also stupid.   Is this the "new civility" that Barack Obama is promoting.  You are trying to convince people to your cause, so you decide to alienate people by giving to "the finger" to a President who is dead?  Why?  Ronald Reagan was not homophobic (what prompted Reagan to act on AIDS was when his and Nancy's friend Rock Hudson got ill).  Ronald Reagan did not cause the AIDS crisis.  While Reagan arguably, in hindsight, could have done more that is true for everyone at the time (including Tony Kushner).  Reagan and the Republicans did fund the National Institute of Health on research and did liberalize FDA regulation to allow expedited research studies (without restrictions) and it was those actions that allowed the disease to be dealt with.

So to the Tony Kushners, Dan Savages, Matthew "Matty" Hart, Zoe Strauss, and other lefty gay activists trying to blame AIDS deaths on Republicans and conservatives: blame your own community, if anyone, for not addressing the sexual aspect of AIDS sooner.  AIDS and HIV is a virus that spread out of West Africa.  It spread due to changes in air travel. bush meat trade, changes in sexual morays, etc..  To the extent promiscuous sex played a role in the spread of AIDS in Western gay communities (via Patient Zero, etc.) while complicated, is well documented.   Ronald Reagan is not to blame.  You want us (through public dollars) to fund this research and then you act like this?  Are you insane?

And George W. Bush!  What!  Are you kidding me?  George W. Bush did more for AIDS prevention and treatment than anyone (and more than Bill Clinton and Barack Obama combined).
