Should women be allowed in combat?

AL TAQADDUM, IRAQ (16 June 2005) — LCpl's Rebecca and Michael Nance, 20 and 21-year olds respectively, reunited here recently. So far from home, yet so close together. Rebecca, a mechanic attached to Combat Logistics Regiment 25, and Michael, with Marine Wing Support Group 27 in Al Asad, Iraq, are siblings from Moline, Illinois. Michael is serving his second deployment, while his sister is in the middle of her first. Michael joined the Marine Corps in 2002 and Rebecca joined the Marine Corps reserve in 2003.

I initially just reported on this with no comment.  Many people I agree with generally, including Stacy McCainRoxeanne DeLucaBob Belvedere, and Allen West say no.  They make good points, although I do not completely agree with them on this issue.
Update:  This is the most persuasive argument against women in combat...

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, CALIFORNIA (19 May 2005) — Cpl. Steinunn Truesdale, a native of Reykjavík, Iceland, displays her Purple Heart Medal she received for injuries sustained in an anti-tank mine blast during a vehicle convoy operation in Al Anbar province, Iraq 2004.
Marco Rubio notes women are already in combat.  While I think Panetta is making this decision for political than practical reasons, I have also noted that the old phrase "Every Marine is a rifleman" recognizes that anyone in service can end up on the front lines (and have to be prepared for that).  We have many women in service, so we need to recognize they can and do end up in combat anyway.

Update:
Rick Peters notes women are already in harms way.
Jazz Shaw Has A different Take Than Peters
Countries that allow women in combat roles.

I would caution watching this closely.  Women can now volunteer for combat.  Will the military do this in a PC manner than puts both women and men involved in harms way?  I sure hope not, but those fears are legitimate.  While there are a few individual exceptions, Women and men are not physically equal.  A fair and objective physical fitness test could be employed to ensure a woman serving does not endanger her male comrades do to strength issues.   Obviously women on the front lines and in combat raises the risk of rape and capture, but that risk remains regardless and is never fully eliminated.

Allen West may still have hope...West wins to get recount of early contested votes.

County Canvassing Board Agrees to Recount...
It would be a shame to lose a man like this from Congress.  Of course, if he should fail to get this stolen election reversed, West would make a hell of a RNC Chair.

Never Forget...

And it was NOT a workplace shooting...it was terrorism.

Apparently Valerie Jarrett got her way on Ali Mussa Daqduq: Terrorist who tortured to death five U.S. servicemen to be set free...

Valerie Jarrett got her way on this one:
Obama's Catch and Release Policy In Action
The atrocities took place in a city called Karbala, south of Baghdad in early 2007. Around a dozen terrorists dressed in U.S. military uniforms opened fire on Americans after approaching a camp in five sports utility vehicles resembling U.S. transports. One U.S. soldier died at the scene and four others were kidnapped, tortured and executed. Daqduq, a Hezbollah commander, was the mastermind.
But President Obama didn’t want to remove the terrorist from Iraq without permission from the country, in order not to violate its sovereignty. He also refused to take Daqduq to the U.S. Naval base in Guantanamo Cuba, which houses other high-value terrorists, because the facility is an anathema in the Middle East and Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki would not approve the “unacceptable” Guantanamo option.
So Obama handed Daqduq over to the Iraqis even though several members of congress pointed out that it would be the same as freeing him. Apparently, Iraq pinky promised to hold him accountable for murdering our soldiers. No one, probably not even Obama, really believed that and this week a national newswire story confirmed it.
That Barack Obama would release Ali Mussa Daqduq to the Iraqi Government is insane, given what Daqduq had done.   As predicted, the Iraqi government is releasing Daqduq.   Rep. Allen West  in his letter to President Obama is absolutely correct in calling this an utter betrayal of the United States military.  The Israelis of course hunt and kill terrorists.  Why is this wrong?

Joe Scarborough is a cowardly tool and has to dance to his masters at MSNBC...

Joe Scarborough calls for Romney to apologize for Allen West?  Why should Mitt Romney apologize for Allen West?  This is in response to Hillary Rosen's back firing comments about Ann Romney?  This is why prostitution is so demeaning, because you have to do nasty things like this.  Then again, who knows, maybe Joe Scarborough likes his job.

Mediate has the interaction between Michael Steele and Peggy Noonan in response to Joe Scarborough's idiotic question:

“Why are you connecting the two?” Steele asked Scarborough.
“No, no, it’s me. It’s me here,” said Scarborough, silencing the others. “I’m asked a question and, Peggy, let me answer. No, I’m going to answer it first. He asked me a question, I’m going to answer it, and then you can respond.”
And, so, he did:
Here we have a cable news pundit that has shut down the political discourse over the past 24 hours when a sitting United States congressman says something deeply, deeply offensive. And no Republican has spoken out against that. Does nobody see there’s a little bit of inconsistency here, Peggy? Do you distance yourself from Allen West’s comments?
“I don’t need to distance myself, Joe,” said Noonan. “You are being mischievous.” These are two different stories, she emphasized, adding that West’s comment was nothing short of “absurd” and called back to an “unfortunate time” in our nation’s history.
Mischievous is not the word I would use to describe what Joe Scarborough is doing here, but I appreciate that Michael Steele and Peggy Noonan had the good sense to push back on this.

And the lefty blogs like Raw Story and Crooks and Liars are all over this (trying desperately to change the current narrative)  The left really really really do not want Hillary Rosen's gaffe to attach to the White House, because this kills what they thought was their best game for attacking Romney and the GOP (the make believe war on women).  The cowards at Raw Story just banned me for this comment:
Why would Romney apologize for West's remark?  Because West endorsed him?  West also corrected himself afterwards.   The problem here is we all know Hillary Rosen was coordinating her remarks with the White House and she screwed up.  http://althouse.blogspot.com/2...  And Team Obama made sure she took one for the Team.
Update:  I can comment again at The Raw Story  (at least for now), so I guess my ban is lifted.

That this story is backfiring on the White House and it bothers the left.  A lot.  They consider Ann Romney a threat and tried to take her out.   Hillary Rosen's comments were no more spontaneous than George Stephanopolous' comments about contraception at the GOP debate.  Instead they made her look better and them worse in comparison.  Ann Romney was smart to strike back and defend herself when they went after her.  As Michelle Malkin is noting, they also managed to drive conservatives toward Romney and focusing the attack back on the White House.  The Democrats do not want to discuss the economy or oil prices or anything other than this make believe "war on women" that they contend the right is waging.

Congressman Allen West says it best...

Congressman Allen West's open letter to the Weekly Standard
“I have sat back and assessed the incident with the video of our Marines urinating on Taliban corpses. I do not recall any self-righteous indignation when our Delta snipers Shugart and Gordon had their bodies dragged through Mogadishu. Neither do I recall media outrage and condemnation of our Blackwater security contractors being killed, their bodies burned, and hung from a bridge in Fallujah.
“All these over-emotional pundits and armchair quarterbacks need to chill. Does anyone remember the two Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division who were beheaded and gutted in Iraq?
“The Marines were wrong. Give them a maximum punishment under field grade level Article 15 (non-judicial punishment), place a General Officer level letter of reprimand in their personnel file, and have them in full dress uniform stand before their Battalion, each personally apologize to God, Country, and Corps videotaped and conclude by singing the full US Marine Corps Hymn without a teleprompter.
“As for everyone else, unless you have been shot at by the Taliban, shut your mouth, war is hell.”
Congressman West is absolutely correct.  I thank Congressman West and these Marines for their service.  The 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines (of which these Marines were part of) were fighting the Taliban in Helmand province.  As noted by NPR doing a story of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines fighting in the same region, there were high casualties in the fighting there.  Be thankful you did not have to face it.

The video in question was taken months ago.  These are young men who were under incredible stress and in danger.  What they did was wrong, and no one is justifying that, but it is also completely forgivable.  They deserve our understanding and respect, not attacks.  Yes war is a brutal, but to suggest this is some sort of war crime, given what limited information of the circumstances is know at this time, is disgraceful.  At least allow the military to do its investigation.

As noted by Dana Loesch who was attacked for her comments:
The disproportionate anger on the part of progressives is fueled by their dislike of our military. That what this proves.
The left is attacking me so they can give the Obama administration a pass–unlike what they did with Bush and Abu Ghraib. Like it or not, I’ll stand up for our troops no matter which president is in charge.
Of course, some of these critics are too far left now for even their former friends...
