Nick Kristof Has GOP Daddy Issues

Kristof sort of acknowledges Democrat run states and cities are not doing so well. But like an angsty teenager, he blames the cause of that on the GOP not acting like a parent (and keeping the Democrats honest).  He suggests we need more centrist conservative leaders, like John McCain, to keep Donald Trump in line.

Thanks for the advice Nick, but...no. I am also old enough to remember how Democrats treated John McCain when he ran for President. The GOP as a whole does not have to accommodate you. There are plenty of centrist Republicans out there that you and your fellow Democrats could support and vote for (I hear Mitt Romney is still prowling about). Better yet, why not recruit some centrist moderate Democrats to run in some of these failed one party states? Can the Democrats not produce pragmatic centrist politicians like John F. Kennedy, Patrick Moynihan, or Ed Koch anymore? Pro Tip: David Hogg is probably not the type of politician you should be recruiting.

Can Graham-Cassidy Obamacare Repeal-Replace Pass The Senate? Update: Guess who's voting no...

It is hardly repealing Obamacare, although at this point it about as good as things are ever going to get. It does shift the Medicare portions of Obamacare to the States (via block grants) which is ok. They probably have 48 or 49 votes. With Collins and Paul as likely noes, that leaves it all on McCain and Murkowski.  I assume Graham can woo Cranky John (he has his ways), but Murkowski?

If Insider Trading Is A Crime, Why Can Congress Do It?

Rub A Dub Dub, It's Fun In The Tub: Senate congeniality means you rub my back and I'll rub yours...

It is both parties. They are thick as thieves and corrupt as hell.  Not only did Congress exempt themselves from Obamacare, but they also exempted themselves from insider trading.

And "Honorable" John McCain is as corrupt and dirty as they come. Yes, McCain's wife is very wealthy, but John McCain himself has amassed quite a fortune on his own. He is worth tens of millions of dollars. How do you compile that sort of wealth on a public salary?

Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton are not the only ones feeding at the government troughMitch McConnell, John Kasich (good advice to constituents on how to buy a house), Harry Reid are examples of people "public service" who have amassed multi-million dollar fortunes.

Even Socialist Bernie Sanders managed to score a few choice real estate properties, while his wife ran a college into bankruptcy. Feel the Bern indeed.

So we wonder, why things never seem to change? Because once you win the lottery of getting in the House and Senate, you haver zero personal incentive to change it. And they get to make the oversight rules, on themselves.

John McCain and Brain Cancer

I am sympathetic to John McCain the man, warrior and patriot, while at the same time profoundly in disagreement with him over much of his politics and positions as a U.S. Senator. I supported him and was frustrated by him when he ran for President. At the same time, I recognize that politics is often the art of compromise. McCain is a complex person.

His judgment about people like Ted Kennedy (who was a horrible nasty person) was misplaced. I recognize in the Senate you have to work with the opposition (and not all of them are bad, simply because they are the opposition) but Ted Kennedy was a liar and corrupted soul.

I wish and pray for John McCain to have a speedy recovery. My prayers to his family also, since this will be very difficult for them. I hope he gets to spend quality time with his family.

I also hope he retires from the Senate, because that would be better for the country. I do not support Republicans who think attacking conservatism shows how "fair" they are. If conservatism is right (and I am speaking in broad sense of free markets, limited government/fiscal conservatism, and liberty), then it is right. Support that.

Mitch McConnell delays health care vote for John McCain Update: Mike Lee and Jerry Moran out, current bill DOA

While I wish John McCain a speedy recovery (although I think he should retire), I also wish we didn't have so many Republican senators who want to be John McCain?

Rand Paul says McConnell does not have the votes. I concur with him that leaving Obamacare in place to die on its own is better than adopting it, keeping most of it, and giving it a Republican name (when it ultimately fails guess who will be blamed). Repeal first and then worry about trying to replace it.

Update:  DRUDGE REPORT: Repeal Dead, Obamacare remains law of the land and Strait Up Repeal Vote Next (We need to pressure all Senators to vote yes for this)

Marco Rubio makes the right decision on Rex Tillerson...

I did not see any upside for Marco Rubio to vote no, and apparently neither did Marco Rubio.  I doubt even Mitt Romney was lobbying against Rex Tillerson.

Smart move by Rubio. What does this possible protest vote do, endear Rubio to the all so powerful McMuffin-McPuffin wing of the GOP?  I am sure Schumer would be happy to use Little Marco again like he did during the Gang of Eight fiasco. That did not exactly work out well for Marco then. What makes him think that is a good idea now?

If Marco voted no on this, he might find himself abandoned as a GOP castaway on an island, without even his 'luxury' speedboat to escape on. No Senator wants to be an island.

I can understand Rex Tillerson not being Marco Rubio's first choice for Secretary of State, but President Trump gets to make this pick. To his credit, Rex Tillerson did display a certain degree of moxy I sort of liked.  Smart decision by Rubio to back off this ledge.

Heat Street: Little Marco mocked for voting for Rex Tillerson after tough talk at hearing.  This was an unforced error on Rubio's part. What is the upside of doing this in the first place? Still, he did not double down on stupid by voting no after being abandoned by McCain and Graham.  So he has that going for him.

WARNING: You can never unsee this...

I doubt even that cup is big enough for the amount of crap out of these two...

Senator Rubio, remember how that Gang of Eight press conference turned out for you.  Don't make the same mistake again. Do you really want to join forces against Donald Trump with the media and the 'deep state'? Because Trump is winning that war. You do not have to throw in completely with Trump, but killing Rex Tillerson's chances in committee is not a hill to die on.

We all get Putin is bad. Guess what, so are some of China, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, Cuba and Venezuela's leaders (and the list goes on).

If you have legitimate concerns about Rex Tillerson, why not quietly and directly present them to President Elect Trump?  After all, what you are engaged in is Advise and Consent.  I would try the advise part first (and sometimes a public hearing is not the best time to do that).

Tillerson was not my first choice, but then again, I am not President Elect. What I have heard so far in the hearings does not even remotely go to disqualification status for Tillerson. I would think you might even agree with this. While the Senate has the right to consent, there is something to be said about letting the President pick who he wants. And be careful the crowd you hang out with

You should pick and choose your battles more carefully.

Hot Air: Classic Rubio (what's the point)

I have special contempt for our GOP Elites...

I get many conservatives do not care for Donald Trump. Trump was not my first choice either.  Out of the 17 GOP candidates running he was towards the bottom of the list (I had Kasich and Jeb lower, but that's it).

Trump is who we got. We knew he was a vulgarian (although none of his GOP found stuff like this to use against him). None of this should be any surprise.

Now I do not blame the opposition for trying this: Find plenty of opposition material on Trump and dump it on him in October. Hypocritical for the Clintons to be doing this, but I understand. We should see this for what it is and respond appropriately. I am not suggesting conservatives endorse what Trump said (you can and should condemn that), but to see the absolute panic of the right over this amazing (and just shows how craven and cowardly our side really is). Do you really want to know how we got Donald Trump? Nature abhors a vacuum.

When Bill Clinton was impeached, the Democrats defended him from Republicans. They fought back, even though Bill was caught red handed lying under oath (which is what he was actually impeached for and which he ended up getting disbarred for five years for).  They said it was no big deal a President was caught having sex with a 22 year old intern in the Oval Office (a power dynamic that would have gotten any other male executive fired it they got similarly caught repeating it).

But it is not just consensual affairs with Clinton. There were charges of rape too. By Democrat women who were allies of the Clintons at the time.  Didn't Hillary say women who report sexual assault need to be believed? There are a few Democrats who recognize how toxic the Clintons are, most do not.

This is a choice between Trump and Hillary now.  I get those who say they can't go Trump, so why in the hell are some of them going for Hillary?  How do you explain that?

John McCain and Paul Ryan and other establishment Republican go into full panic mode over some tape of Donald Trump saying rude things. Why? John McCain was the guy who praised Edward Kennedy at his funeral as the "lion of the Senate." You mean the same Ted Kennedy who let a girl drown in his car and who liked to make waitress sandwiches with fellow Democrat Chris Dodd? That guy?

Paul Ryan, if you condemned Hillary and Bill Clinton for their past behavior and held them to the same standards you apparently hold Trump, I would at least say you were consistent. But you are not.  And that's why your actions are backfiring on you.

Ted Cruz, your timing has been particularly bad with dealing with Trump since he cinched the nomination. Try not to screw up again.

Last night's Saturday Night Live was unwatchable. They were trying to parody Trump with Alec Baldwin stepping in (ironic, perhaps), but not particularly funny. Sad, actually. There was a time that SNL could address issues like this through parody without the overtly one sided partisan politically correct preening we get today:
