Mandalay Bay Shooting: Why?

We still do not know for sure why this happened. We can't even get a clear timeline of events. While a lot still remains unanswered, this post by Truth About Guns regarding the Mandalay Bay Shooter is excellent.

There are still discrepancies in this time line that need to be answered. It does appear that Jesus Campos went to investigate a locked door, got shot, and then the shooting started. Whether there gaps or not remains to be confirmed.

The explanation that the motive for this attack was personal to the shooter's. Here is an explanation from a so called expert blaming a bad upbringing, gambling, alcohol and valium.  Then there is Steve Wynn saying his people never saw Paddock touch alcohol while at the Wynn.  Perhaps it was some sort of drug interaction that triggered this cold blooded murder.

There is cold horror to that explanation, given that it was not apparently passion or what we generally recognize as insanity. It is as disturbing as terrorism given the complete unpredictability of it. This is a mass shooting unlike other mass shootings.

It is speculation why Campos did not show up, without more facts, but this is a very strange story.

Was the Las Vegas shooter really a professional gambler?

Ann Counter doubts the shooter was a professional gambler. Speculation (he did play a lot in the casinos), but she has a point. Casinos are not in the business of losing money and will retire video gaming machines that pay out too much.

There are people who claim by careful machine selection and playing the progressives, and knowing the percentage odds make money at video poker. But to make it work is a full time job (and you can make a decent living) but not the type of thing that will typically generate multi-millions as has been reported for Paddock. If you are playing a lot, and know your odds and are not reckless, you can basically not lose money (or make a little) and get plenty of comps to make it worthwhile.  But it is unlikely you will rake in millions.

The outcome of this crime is horrible, but the underlying facts are so odd and atypical (compared to other mass shootings). While the time line keeps changing, we still do not have answers.

Mandalay Bay, where the shooting was, is a MGM property. Wynn's hotels are not that far away.  Steve Wynn admitted they tracked Paddock (he played there frequently), as they do many players, but there was nothing exceptional about him. Wynn also said no one in his casino ever saw Paddock drink.  Granted, I would not expect Paddock to drink while playing, but he did get plenty of comps and opportunities to drink when he was not playing. Others claim he drank heavily. What gives?

Dianne Feinstein Admits: No Law Would Have Stopped Las Vegas Shooter...

It is refreshing that Dianne Feinstein is admitting this (even though she does want to go pass a "law" anyway just to show she did something). The Las Vegas shooter was a methodical, careful cold blooded killer. While we still do not know what his motivation was, obeying the law was not a consideration for him. While he legally obtained his firearms (at least we assume he did), he obviously planned this out long in advance.  His planning and execution of this attack was completely illegal.  No law would have deterred him.

I would also strongly suggest going to Sixty Minutes and seeing the interview of the police officers who stormed the shooter's hotel room. I am amazed they managed to do so in 12 minutes from when the shooting started. Kudos to the hero unarmed security guard Jesus Campos, who likely deterred the shooter from carrying out more mayhem, and while shot himself stayed until the officers arrived.
