Is Steve Bannon finished?

Update:  While not officially confirmed yet, it looks like Bannon is going gone. He may have already resigned and that interview he did was just to sealed the deal. Still, Bannon may be more effective for the Trump agenda outside than in.  

A lot of NeverTrumpers are predicting Bannon goes out for revenge against Trump. They then nuance that by saying he will be attacking Kelly, McMasters, etc. I guess we will see what happens, but I do not get the feeling Bannon wants to destroy Trump. Bannon does unleash, however, on the GOPe.

Mr. President: Hire Newt Gingrich as your Chief of Staff

Mr. President:  You have a lot of enemies (most disappointingly on the GOP side) and I agree you need to fight back and fight back hard. But you need a team behind you to fight with you. You are flailing around and hurting yourself. Get back on your agenda.

While firing Comey was right decision, you inflicted a lot of harm on yourself in the way you did it. You ended up alienating the FBI, getting a special counsel appointed, and emboldening the Democrats and NeverTrumpers. You are smarter than this.

The suggestion of Newt Gingrich as Chief of Staff has been discussed widely since you won. I know Newt is a pain in the ass, but he would make a hell of a Chief of Staff. Newt is not perfect, but he knows Washington and would be a far more effective than Reince Priebus. You need strong men and women around you, not these craven disloyal "yes" sycophants, who when out of sight end up leaking to the Washington Post and New York Times.

You should also take TOM's advice and hire Bill Sammon.

So why would Kasich drop out after that statement yesterday?  Obviously because Cruz dropped out. Apparently Kasich thinks he still has a shot on being Trump's Veep or something.  Myra Adams now thinks that is increasingly unlikely (she thinks Gingrich is on the short list). I am not sure what else explains this whole Kasich campaign other than his insufferable vanity.

Sorry John, while you might help a bit in Ohio, we have Newt and Christie fighting over Donald Trump's affection like two Bangkok bar girls fighting over a drunk sailor with a wad of cash. I am not sure you want to get in that scrum. Then again, knowing your style, you might actually enjoy that.

This Kids in the Hall clip sums up the Newt and Mitt back and forth well.  Newt tries to reinvent himself (again) at CPAC, but it is probably too late...  Mitt has engaged in this too.


There is an alternative.   Rick Santorum has not fallen into the trap Newt and Mitt did in attacking from the left... however all is not clear for a Santorum path to the White House.

Jonah Goldberg is starting to lose faith and thinks Rick Santorum really is just a big government guy who want to promote social conservatism that way:    

Likewise, on substance, if you were going to design a GOP candidate to fit the moment, it wouldn’t be Santorum. The difference between him and George W. Bush: Santorum’s deadly serious about compassionate conservatism. He is honestly and forthrightly committed to using government to realize his moral vision for America. That’s his prerogative, and he has many good (and some very bad) arguments on his side.

But, suffice it to say, he is not the one the tea partiers have been waiting for.

Message to Rick Santorum:  Embrace the tea party.  The Tea Party = Limited Government, Unapologetic U.S. sovereignty, and Constitutional Originalism.  Social and Fiscal conservatism and libertarianism are not mutually exclusive but complementary.  You do not have to compromise on your moral principles to be a small government guy.   And we do not need (or want) any more big government fixes. We do not need (or want) government interfering in our lives.  The priority right now is reducing government, reducing spending and keeping America safe.  And it neutralizes arguments directed from the left (in an attempt to scare independents and moderates) when you clearly state that.  Republicans and GOP conservatives need to adopt some of these libertarian principles.

Drudge, in a rather Spyterical way, says it will be Mitt and then links to Politico.

In the end, the news conference later today is probably all about The Donald.  Of course, The Donald, if he is thinking of jumping in wants Romney to have as much competition as possible and drag this out as long as possible.  Probably this endorsement is more about publicity, for The Donald, than politics.  So long as The Donald does not endorse himself run as a third party, do we really care?  Freakily, going back twenty four years ago, Spy Magazine noted Donald Trump's presidential ambitions back in its January-February 1988 edition.

This isn't exactly the kind of endorsement the Romney campaign is looking for. 
Perhaps Soros was being candid or perhaps Creepy Dude was causing mischief, but these doubts (which more than a few on the right share) are all the more reason for this nomination process to go through to the convention.  Santorum needs to stay in.  The only way to have this nomination process remain open is for Gingrich, Santorum and Paul to take enough delegates so it has to go to the convention.  Claiming Romney won now and not letting this process vet out would be a big mistake by the GOP establishment.  The only way Obama is defeated in the general is with a unified opposition.  

Terraforming Mars: Can we do it and does Mars have rights?

Glenn Reynolds, Robert Pinson, Robert Zubrin, and Ron Bailey have raised the issue of ethics in terraforming, but Kim Stanley Robinson also dealt with the topic (in a fictional context) in some detail in his Mars Trilogy.  Robinson is a good job in creating characters debating the pros and cons of exploring, colonizing, and terraforming Mars.

Zubrin also makes the argument that the technology for (relatively) inexpensive travel to Mars exists now.  Too bad Newt Gingrich did not argue his Mars plan along those lines (although it is certainly not to late for him to do so).

As you might have seen, yesterday Mitt Romney's Super PAC began blasting out an ad attacking Newt Gingrich for only having been mentioned once—and not in a flattering light—in Ronald Reagan's diaries. Today, National Review stepped it up a notch and actually claimsNewt Gingrich "repeatedly insulted" Ronald Reagan.The thing that makes these attacks so absurd is that they are being made on behalf of Mitt Romney, who wasn't a Republican when Ronald Reagan was president and specifically said in his 1994 U.S. Senate campaign that he was not seeking public office to support either Reagan or George H.W. Bush. Romney ended up getting trounced by 17 points.
Newt Gingrich, meanwhile, was busy leading Republicans to their first victory in forty years in the House. And the following year, Nancy Reagan credited him with taking up the mantle of conservatism, saying Barry Goldwater had passed it to Ronald Reagan, and that Ronald Reagan had passed it to Newt Gingrich.
I don't say any of this to defend Newt. Rather, I'm pointing it out as an illustration of the pathetic absurdity of Mitt Romney's presidential campaign.
