Room 237 analyzes Stanley Kubrick's The Shining

A fun film, if you think finding symbolism of genocide is fun. I have thought The Shining is a master work by a master director. I am not sure I buy all the theories raised in this film (while there are intentional references I do not believe Kubrick staged the moon landings), but a lot of them are spot on.

Ad Astra

A thoughtful and serious movie. Written and directed by James Gray. A rather bleak one in many ways--but optimistic too. Themes such as the relationship of God and man, fathers and sons, and loneliness are explored (the cold enormous emptiness of space is an excellent setting for all those issues). There is also a big Heart of Darkness influence to this film (or maybe Apocalypse Now). 

The story is far from perfect, but overall it did make me think. There are a few scenes, apparently added by the studio over the objection of the director, that should have been left out. Still it is beautifully filmed and the production quality is top notch--which lends itself to the big screen. I do not want to give the ending away. Brad Pitt's performance is very good. Tommy Lee Jones is ok (but not as good as Brad's). 

If you are into serious science issues go see it (it was better than 2010: The Year We Make Contact and Interstellar) and if that is not what you are into--there's always Downton Abbey. Ok--go see Rambo: Last Blood. 

Many may not like it (the audience score from Rotten Tomatoes reflects that). I read some of the reviews and they also don't seem to capture what I saw. Different people will likely have very different takes on this film.

The Shining Code: A moon truther explanation of the film and the symbolism in it...

There is a lot of intended symbolism in The Shining, but this explanation in the video below is nonsense. Of course the Apollo references (and I agree they are there) could be (and are more likely) mythological references.

Still, this video immediately blow is strangely fascinating to watch (despite by disagreement with his conclusions) given it is dissecting a great film scene by scene...

Kubrick made the material his own. Metaphors of genocide and man's inhumanity to man are the bigger themes Kubrick was making with this film.  So are father son dynamics.  So why I disagree with the interpretation of the two videos in this post, they do catch intentional symbolic references that Kubrick was making.

A different take on the symbolism in the film.  If you do not have an hour plus for the video above, the video below is just six minutes (and deals with spatial anomalies).
