I am alarmed, angered, and deeply disappointed by the Inspector General’s finding of numerous failures by DOJ and FBI in investigating potential Espionage Act violations by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. 

This report confirms investigative decisions made by the FBI during the pendency of this investigation were unprecedented and deviated from traditional investigative procedures in favor of a much more permissive and voluntary approach. This is not the way normal investigations are run. 

The investigation was mishandled. The investigatory conclusions were reached before the end of the witness interviews. The July 5th press conference marked a serious violation of policy and process. And the letters to Congress in the fall of 2016 were both delayed in substance and unnecessary in form. 

Moreover, the treatment afforded to former Secretary Clinton and other potential subjects and targets was starkly different from the FBI’s investigation into Trump campaign officials. Voluntariness and consent in the former were replaced with search warrants, subpoenas, and other compulsory processes in the latter. Many of the investigators and supervisors were the same in both investigations but the investigatory tactics were not.
Former Director Comey violated Department policy in several significant ways. The FBI’s actions and those of former Director Comey severely damaged the credibility of the investigation, the public’s ability to rely on the results of the investigation, and the very institutions he claims to revere. 

The report also conclusively shows an alarming and destructive level of animus displayed by top officials at the FBI. Peter Strzok’s manifest bias trending toward animus casts a pall on this investigation. Bias is so pernicious and malignant as to both taint the process, the result, and the ability to have confidence in either.
The law enforcement community has no greater ally in Congress than me. But continued revelations of questionable decision making by FBI and DOJ leadership destroys confidence in the impartiality of the institutions I have long served, respected, and believed in. 

This is not the FBI I know. This is not the FBI our country needs. This is not the FBI citizens and suspects alike deserve. 

It is now urgently incumbent on Attorney General Sessions and Director Wray to take decisive action to restore Americans’ confidence in our justice system.

Merrick Garland for FBI Director?

I thought this was a joke at first, but apparently it is being seriously considered by Mitch McConnell (at least that was floated on Fox News Sunday this morning). A couple of things: Would Garland give up a life time appointment in the D.C. Circuit to be FBI Director?  It opens up a significant judicial appointment for Trump. At the same time, couldn't a very hostile FBI Director cause a lot of problems for President Trump?

Still, as a way of trolling Democrats, it is sort of interesting.

Of course, I have my own preference...

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi: The Obama Administration and CIA (covering their asses) versus the actual security detail heroes who defended the Benghazi station that night...

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is an excellent movie and recommend you go see it. The movie starts off by saying it is a true story. Not surprisingly, given how he is portrayed by the character "Bob" in the movie, the actual Benghazi CIA Station Chief does not care for the book and movie's depiction of his actions (leading up to and during the al Qaeda and Ansar al-Sharia terror attack on the night of September 11-12, 2012).  

One of the most hotly disputed points (other than why no air support ever came) is whether "Bob" issued a stand down order that delayed the rescue attempt of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and Sean Smith  (they were at the consulate compound a mile away) by approximately a half hour and likely contributed to their deaths by smoke inhalation. 

The CIA denies a "stand down" order. That is disputed by the security detail who heroically defended the station that night:

In interviews, the contractors have been adamant that the “stand down” order was issued. Earlier this week, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, said in an interview with the Boston Herald that when it comes to the stand down order, “there are witnesses who said there was one and there are witnesses who said there was not one… So the best I can do is lay out what the witnesses say and then you are going to have to make a determination as to who you believe is more credible.”

[Mitchell] Zuckoff [who wrote the book 13 Hours: The Secret Soliders of Benghazi which the movie is based on] issued a statement this evening through Paramount: 

“The movie and book got it right. The CIA spokesman’s comments are predictable but not remotely credible.
“If you read “Bob’s” statements to the Washington Post, he would have us believe that he neither prevented the guys from leaving nor approved or ordered their departure. That’s nonsensical on its face and contradicted by facts and logic:
“– Two of our named sources, John Tiegen and Kris Paronto, heard Bob say those words, stand down, which they shared with Jack and D.B., who already understood that they were being held back. Our two key sources are on the record, with their names, while Bob remains shielded by anonymity.
“– Neither Bob nor the CIA disputes that a delay occurred and that the guys ultimately moved out without his authorization. That, logically, adds up to a simple conclusion: he held them back and then they left without his approval.
