23 January 1960: Journey To The Bottom of the Mariana Trench

 


Trieste with Auguste Piccard and Don Walsh go to the bottom of the Challenger Deep

It was August Piccard who deserves most credit for this endevor. He came up with a brilliant design to get down to 1000x atmosphere, without killing the passengers. The US Navy, however, was wise enough to sponsor and fund this work.  




No mermaids were reported down there, but if they did exist they might look like this...
