Barbara Koop was born in Germany and emigrated to New York State (her family changed their name to Cope). She took vows in 1862, taking the name Marianne, and after hospital work in New York, traveled to Hawaii to do the same in 1883. Intending to just stay long enough to establish a mission, she ended up staying for 35 years. She died in 1918.
