Express: Reunited!
An American veteran was filmed reuniting with his French sweetheart 75-years on from the Second World War. KT Robbins, now 97, fell in love with an 18-year-old French girl, Jeannine Pierson née Ganayen, now 92, while he was stationed in her hometown, Briey, in 1944. The 24-year-old, after two months, was told he had to quickly leave the village and head to the Eastern Front to fight. This is a feel good story. I hope he goes back to see her again after this brief reunion. I am also glad to see French journalists helping out on this one:
Daily Mail: French journalists helped find her for him
[KT Robbins] still had that photo when he was approached by a group of French journalists for a report on World War II veterans in the United States.EBL: D-Day: The Lost Documentaries, Star Trek's James "Scotty" Doohan at D-Day, Hedgerow Tactics, Wavery B. Woodson, Jr., Last Living Memories of D-Day, Women of D-Day, Mulberry Harbours, The German Perspective, Archival Footage, Band of Brothers: D-Day Jump
Robbins showed them Pierson's photo and told them he would like to return to her village 'to find her family' while he was in France for the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
He assumed that Pierson had passed away, adding: 'For sure I won't ever get to see her.'
But the journalists managed to track down Pierson, finding her at a retirement home in Montigny-lès-Metz, Moselle, about 27 miles from where the pair first met.
They arranged a reunion for Robbins and Pierson at the retirement home, telling the veteran: 'She's alive, and she's waiting for you'.
