Pastafarian at Lem's Place asks the most important question: How did Bradley Manning get top secret clearance?

There should be more courts martial and prosecutions than Bradley Manning.  How about going after the people who approved his top secret clearance?

Separated at Birth:
Patafarian goes to the real issue in the sad legacy of Bradley Manning...
Manning was a 5-foot-1, 105 pound out-and proud homosexual who enlisted during the DADT era. He once threatened his stepmother with a knife, and the police were involved, although apparently no charges were filed.  He was nearly discharged in basic training, where he complained of being bullied, was rumored to have had a breakdown, and screamed back at his drill sergeants when they would scream at him.
During his military training, he was referred to Army mental health counselors.  He was an emotional basket case. once crying for hours after watching "The Last King of Scotland."  At one point, he sent a photograph of himself dressed as a woman to his master sergeant, and he considered gender reassignment surgery.
So naturally, this guy was given top secret security clearance.

Tried to get out the Army by wearing drag...

Klinger!  Didn't work for him either.
At least Klinger was not a traitor.

Actually King of Scotland was a good movie.  But balling for hours after seeking it?

Update:
The same thing was raised with Edward Snowden.  But arguably the government did not have the same flags in Snowden's record to tip it off how unstable he was.  Here Mannings' record just screams he is not an individual who should be trusted with anything sensitive.

Update:
But hey, why worry about national security when you have sex scandals to deal with!

  1. Regrettably, these days much of security clearance investigation is done by contractors and sub-contractors, who got the work by submitting the lowest bid.

No only did he have a top secret clearance, but he had Roles & Permissions assigned to him that were absurd for a PFC..e.g., the same as the general in whose office he worked ... an all too common practice by Db administrators, also low bid contractors, just pass out blanket Roles & Permissions at high levels for everyone in said office. No individual need to know, based upon the "Role" of a position, are considered.

Where I last worked in DOD we worked very hard to to prevent this, in our activities, with interlocking Roles and Permissions covering 4 global databases...before you got a "Permission" you had to have a "Role" approved first and defined by position description. We spread out the approving authorities the contractor Db admins had to acquire...no omnibus nothing.

    1. To clarify...just because you have a "Top Secret" does NOT mean you qualify for any need to know "role" and without that, technically, you should acquire no permissions on databases. In short, you could have a Top Secret clearance, but no access, in a given position...if the system is working as it should. A clearance does not give you cart blanche access to any SSID you select, let alone permissions on said SSID.
