Disappointing. It starts out with stupid anti-Christian tropes and lies, suggesting the Normans brought Christianity to England to defeat the native faiths. They are off by about 1000 years, since Christianity showed up in the British Isles shortly after Christ's life and when the Romans were still occupying Britania. The Angles and Saxons were Germanic tribes from Denmark and Germany that drove out the Celtic Druids from their lands, as the Romans withdrew starting around 450 AD. The Anglo Saxons and Britons in England were solidly Christian when the Normans showed up in 1066. Depicting the Anglo Saxons as gentle forest dwellers praying to the old gods is intended by the writers as a slap against Christianity (which is depicted in a corrupt light in the show).
Yes William the Conqueror (the Normans were decendants of Vikings living in Normandy) divested the Anglo Saxon lords of their fiefdoms and gave their lands and property to his supporters. For the regular people it was mostly meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Yes the Normans put their own French clergy in charge of the Church. There was a well established church in England at the time.
The Norman Conquest of 1066 was a fundamental change of Britain. But it is also a prequel to another big event in British history with King John grudgingly sealing the Magna Carta of 1215 (forced to do so by his own nobels). The underlying story of the Robin Hood myth is out of control government and tax payers resisting that over reach.
Good cast. Seems like a missed opportunity. Meh.
