A poor Calabrese family has to marry off a daughter to pay off the back rent and debts. The oldest daughter Maria volunteers to do this. A cranky old farmer uncle and his depressed widower nephew live up in the north, in Vicenza. Drama unfolds. Lots of prejudice by the local townsfolks against those "Southerners" (welcome to Italy). Set in the 1960s.
