    The heroine, fleeing from her molesting father, is shot dead by the police and can no longer protect her daughter from her father/grandfather who impregnated his daughter. The P.I. [ Jacks Nicholson ] who was only trying to do the right thing ultimately causes the death of Evelyn Mulwray [ Faye Dunnaway ]. The L.A. police tell Jack's associates to "get him out of here" and when Jack turns back, his associate, Walsh, grabs his arm and quietly says, "Come on Jake, it's Chinatown" which was code for, the more you try to help, the worse the outcome.
