Lady Deadpool and Elektra

The only way Marvel movies work is if they don't take themselves seriously. Deadpool & Wolverine seems to fit that criteria. I have not seen it yet, but this is one that may be ok.

  1. You obviously never saw the original Sam Raimi directed Spider-Man. (It took the material seriously and was instrumental in kicking off the enter MCU). The 1st Iron Man movie as well. By contrast Thor Love and Thunder was one long wink-wink-nudge-nudge we are so much smarter than this material deserves. It lost money, killed any real hope for the MCU going forward and so cost Disney 100s of millions of dollars. (Not as much as Kathleen Kennedy and Leslye Headland - former personal assistant to Harvey Weinstein - cost Disney)

You could also say that the Blade movie - staring Wesley Snipes - is what actually kicked off the MCU. It was one of the 1st Marvel movies to take the characters at face value, and not make a joke about everything. Between that and Sam Raimi they made Marvel BILLIONS of dollars.

Now Elektra didn't work because it was badly written, poorly directed and acted. You could say the same about Ben Affleck. That movie was destroyed by suits from the studio who had it re-cut after the fact. Suits who didn't understand the audience, the characters, or what they were doing.

Contrast those to abominations with the Daredevil series from Netflix. It took itself completely seriously, and is one of the best bits of Marvel comics ever committed to live action. You can say that for most of the Netflix/Marvel stuff. Once Disney got its hands on it, it has tanked. Because they are too smart to take this stuff seriously.

    1. I did like the first Spiderman (both the comic and the Sam Rami movie)

    2. I liked the Punisher adaptation but unfortunately they pulled the plug on that one. The Watchman movie was good, but the adaptation on HBO was woke unwatchable.

    3. I also know Watchman was not Marvel.

  2. The Right loves to turn up its nose at popular culture. Comics and Graphic Novels are for children. Video games are for children. We have important things to do, like screaming at the TV because our favorite sportsball team is losing a meaningless game to a team from another city.

And the right also abandoned teaching, at all levels from elementary to college. "Those who can do..."

30 or 40 years later they are shocked to discover that they have been systematically erased from popular culture and the state indoctrination system. They have lost all touch with (and influence over) culture.

Politics are downstream of culture, and so they are equally shocked to discover that they are increasingly being hedged out of politics.

Maybe they weren't so smart after all

    1. Politics are downstream of culture, but I appreciate good comics and graphic novels. I agree conservatives should teach more, but unfortunately you do not get hired or tenure if you are of the right.

    2. I think I hit a nerve. I look at a lot of popular culture, but most Marvel movies are not that good (they are boring). Some are excellent. Of course, compared to the complete shitshow that the Star Wars franchise has become, the Marvel universe is not that bad.
