Egypt says no to Palestinians

This is not the least bit surprising. Egypt has been against Palestinians moving to Egypt for decades. That is because Palestinians caused problems in Egypt from 1948 through 1967. Even after the 1973 war--Egypt did not want Palestians going to Egypt.

Egypt negotiated its own peace with Israel, in large part to wash its hands of the Palestinians in Gaza (and also to get billions in aid from the US).

The border between Gaza and Egypt has been officially blocked since 2007 (although there are some transfer back and forth and certainly illicit crossing via tunnels--the area right near Rafah has a number of "friendly" Palestinian-Egyptians).

Unlike the US, you cannot be Egyptian unless your father was Egyptian. There is no birthright citizenship in Egypt.

So of course the Rafah border with Northern Sinai is closed now. The only other border crossing is Eilat-Taba, and that is in Israel. There will be no Palestinians crosing there into Sinai.

This is a problem for Israel's invasion of Gaza--what do you do with the civilians? The population of Gaza is 2.3 million. Most Palestinian Gazans are hostile to Israel and part of the problem, but Israel is not up for killing women and children if it can avoid it (it is both morally and politically desirable to avoid that--and unlike Hamas, Israelis are not savages). The Israelis need a place for Gaza refugees to go, but it will not likely be in Israel--probably some area within Gaza.

Israel has both a military and refugee crisis to deal with.

This is not a big area, the whole country of Israel is about the size of New Jeresy

Gaza is about 25 miles long, seven and a half miles wide.

Gaza could be a Singapore, but it is a Mogadishu

Responsible Statecraft: Why does Egypt fear Gazans leaving Gaza?  Losing land's an issue, Palestnians moving to Egypt a bigger deal.
