Matt Labash: Denial Illustrated
In some ways I agree with Matt and some ways disagree. Given the Dylan Mulvaney Bud Light debacle--putting an octogenerian woman on a swimsuit edition seems a move at least in the right direction. I doubt this will save Sports Illustrated. It might generate a few clicks out of curiosity. Martha looks great for her age--but she is in her eighties. It is what it is.
SI historically did its swimsuit edition because it was winter and typically a lull month after the Super Bowl. SI readers liked checking out the models in a slighly less risque format than Playboy (and like the Victorian Secret catalog, their wives and girlfriends might actually go out and buy some of the swimsuits). Times have changed considerably since then.
SI and other sport publications went woke (not just over this, but a host of other issues). Most people who care about sports don't care about SI or ESPN. They get sport commentary on line or on the radio as they are driving. If you listen to sports on Sirius or other talk radio formats--those niche stations mostly focus on sports.
