They did NOT pull it off. The writing is criminally bad (the opening bit is an utter disgrace to the notion of intelligent life on this planet). It's actually a saving grace that this garbage doesn't appear to have any actual connection to Tolkien, it's just bog standard, box-checking DIE fantasy trash.

I wrote that after episode one. Episode two only made it seem more obvious this is going poorly. It does have a connetion to Tolkien, in that his heirs got a billion dollar payday.
