The Power of the Dog

This Netflix film is getting a lot of buzz. I am a big fan of Westerns, but not this one. Unless Brokeback Mountain is your favorite western, I doubt this one will make your top ten list. I do not want to be too critical of Jane Campion (who both wrote the screen play and directed it)--the cinematography was well done. The screen play is based on a novel from Thomas Savage. The actors do the best they can with the material offered. The pacing was plodding. The critics love it.

Set in Montana in the 1920s, but filmed in South Island, New Zealand. It does (sorta) look like Montana if you squint (it also has that Giant look to it too, which is probably not a coincidence).

Rotten Tomatoes: The Power of the Dog

Kristen Dunst's character drinks a lot. I can't blame her if she went method on this one.

Cumberbatch went method during filming.
