Menschen am Sonntag (1930)

Two couples spend a Sunday at a lake near Berlin. An early Billy Wilder screen play.

Rotten Tomatoes: People on Sunday

A film made without professional actors, basically just two couples spending a Sunday out in Weimar, Germany. A silent film, with very little written dialog. Visually it is well shot and edited, with a charming style, which makes a pretty thin story watchable.

There is no political message in the film, but I couldn't help but think how Billy Wilder had to flee Germany just a few years later. Many of the city-scapes were destroyed during WWII. Then again, I thought the same watching Trading Places with the pivotal commodities scene the World Trade Center (1983 vs. 2001). Just remember how quickly things can go very badly.
