Altamont: 6 December 1969



It was declared the end of the sixties after the fact. It is December 1969, of course it was the end of the sixties, but a shit show like Altamont does close that decade out with a bang. 

Outlaw Chronicles: Hells Angels gives the Angels' perspective of what happened at Altamont. I think everyone now agrees that hiring the Angels for security was a mistake. Mick Jagger did not want cops (almost like defund the police fifty years before the times) and the Grateful Dead's managers recommended the Angels. One of the Angels knocked out Jefferson Airplane's Marty Balin when he allegedly mouthed off to him (I feel sympathetic to the Angel on that one).  

Hells Angel Alan Passaro was prosecuted for stabbing Meredith Hunter (Passaro eventually was acquitted, given Hunter had a gun and was threatening people). That resulted in the Hells Angels demanding $50,000 from the Stones to recoup their legal fees. The Stones balked, but the HA eventually got paid after they put a contract out on Mick Jagger. Good times!
