Them: A Review

While redlining and racial covenants were real, this is a supernatural horror tv series, focused on racism. The premise is a North Carolina black family (dad is an engineer), moving to California in the fifties (to a very white suburban neighborhood in Compton).

My first thought seeing it was, at least we are seeing a married black couple with kids. That is refreshing given you increasingly don't see that black or white anymore. Very stylized (overtly so). It basically shows white people are bad. If you are white and want to self flagellate yourself emotionally, this show for you.

If more deftly handled, this show could have addressed this period of time (and the unfairness of redlining) with nuance. Them definitely fails in that, by mixing fact with a lot of fiction (and gore), it is a failed attempt at social commentary. The original Night of the Living Dead and Jordan Peele's more recent Get Out and Us are so much better.
