The late great William F. Buckley, Jr.
National Review was an important publication. I grew up watching William F. Buckley as a kid when he was on PBS Firing Line. He shaped me politically. He was a huge influence on me. Do you think any kids today are becoming conservatives because of the influence of Rich Lowry and Jonah Goldberg? They and the rest of National Review's leadership are following the Bill Kristol/Weekly Standard business model. Oh well, as sad as that is, Valar Morghulis.
That attack on those Covington Catholic kids was it for me. Catholic boys at a pro-life march and National Review vilifies them (without even a basic investigation or review of what went on)? Beyond the stupidity of attacking those who might be National Review subscribers and supporters one day, do they realize how much they have betrayed us? Do they realize how angry we are?
They do not care. And that is why National Review will fade away to obscurity or just fail altogether.

I cancelled my subscription just after 9-11. Gosh, that's a lifetime ago. They're in business to sell magazines...that drives everything they do.
ReplyDeleteWhile conservative sell outs are common from National Review alumni, I do not see how this helps them sell magazines. It is also just wrong.
DeleteI think they've tapped into (or helped create?) the modern day cuck-rino. People who aren't secure enough in their ideology to shame the average commie or social justice warrior into silence at a dinner party or around the water cooler at work. Because they paint themselves as superior in thought and intelligence, yet lack the ability to reason or articulate basic economic, historic, and rational analysis, they try to soothe those around them with the wishy washy claptrap you hear all the time. They go along with the myth that Dems are colorblind, while Repubs are drooling racists. Flyover country is chock full of knuckle-dragging products of incest.
DeleteIt's a close cousin to the white guilt attitude on the left. They're ashamed to be who/what they are. They don't want to be the kid who's left out of the game, so rather than point out that the game is stupid, they spew nonsense that really is just ad hominem attacks. Look at the long list of loser writers NR has had over the years. Rich Lowry, Jonah Goldberg, and David Frum to name a few. They have nothing to say, except once in a while harumph about some Neanderthal conservative.
I think it's become the magazine for the right-leaning elites. Not the true conservatives, who are mostly working jobs, running businesses, and focusing on their friends and families. As magazines go the way of buggy whips, a digital presence is vital to a company like NR. Clickbait and controversy generates hits. That sells.
Or maybe I'm totally wrong.
Buckley, once he became a doddard, did his part to create the so called "Cuckservative." Lowry is one as is Goldberg. Lowry confirmed his credentials with the defenestration of Derbyshire. Goldberg is just a jumped up simpleton way out of his depth, but is glad to get the invites to the correct parties and loves bloviating on all the right shows. The Paleos exposed Goldberg for what he is.
DeleteUnless NR can dump the current "leadership" it will die and richly deserves it.
I miss Buckley, but he did put these guys in place. The future of National Review should have been more like Mark Steyn and less as it is now. I do like Andy McCarthy, because he is knowledgeable and honest. Most of the rest of them are like the cabana boys from the Weekly Standard.
