Feast of the Seven Fishes

I posted this video before, but it has been a while. The Feast usually doesn't stop with seven fishes, since Italians are like that (so they usually add more).  A meal that is supposed to be a penance before Christmas is turned into a sumptuous feast (albeit without any meat). Don't worry, plenty of meat comes the next day.

The late Vincent Schiavelli wrote a great book on recipes he grew up on in Brooklyn. He devotes a chapter (maybe two) on the Feast.  This pasta and sardine recipe, which is traditional for the Feast of St. Joseph which falls in Lent, would be fabulous for Christmas Eve too.

Green Book had a version of one (in the Bronx too) with the Vallelonga family. Mahershalla Ali just apologized to the Shirley family for not consulting them (they thought things were too familiar between Shirley and Vallelonga in the film, he was an employee).

  1. I manditory item. Baked Eel in a red sauce. Not only does it taste great, it's to remember those who have gone before and enjoyed this poor mans seafood.
