Saffron

Saffron is from the stigmas from the hybridized autumn crocus.  It has taken on being precious, not because of its rarity, but primarily because of the extensive labor needed to harvest it (it does not lend itself to mechanization).  The season is short, it has to be picked and processed by hand, and it takes about a football field size field of crocus to yield a pound of the spice.  Fortunately it only takes a tiny amount (a few strands really) to flavor a dish an a bit more to dye fabric.  So this joins the posts on Tyrian Purple, Carmine, and Indigo.
