Ok, I knew purple was an expensive dye in ancient times and was made from mollusks.  But I did not know all the particulars.  It took tens of thousands of dried out malodorous glands from the murex shells above to make even a small batch of purple dye. Read the whole BBC article. 

The ancient method of producing the non fading dye has been lost. While shellfish is generally not Kosher, the ancient Hebrews used them to create a sky blue dye to decorate Torahs and priest clothes.
