Indigo

With posts on royal (Tyrian) purple and carmine this week, why not one on indigoIndigo was a very profitable crop in the British American Colonies, but due to sugar demand (and sugar is more temperature sensitive and also highly profitable), indigo production moved to South Carolina from the British West Indies.

South Carolina prospered growing indigo and rice. Indigo was not easy to grow or process, but it did make fabric blue. Indigo still has its challenges.
