Ryan Retiring

Legal Insurrection: Ryan Retiring

If you can't effectively lead, better get out of the way...

Mission Accomplished?

I wished Paul Ryan promoted conservative positions better than he did. That said, Ryan was way better as speaker than Weepy John Bohner. I accept Ryan wants to get his twenty years in and spend more time with his wife and teenage children.

  1. I think the 20 year mark is of significance in re your eventual pension benefits. As he is not yet 50, he won't be able to collect them for a while.

He may actually be an honest man whose reflected on what he's accomplished all this time and decided it wasn't worth his time or effort anymore. Also, he's proven to be ill-adapted to leadership positions. His dithering during the presidential campaign was most unedifying. Having to work with Yurtle the Turtle from Louisville cannot be pleasant, either.

    1. I take him at his word he wants to spend more time with his wife and kids. He will make plenty of money out of government. I don't think Ryan has been like a lot of members of congress who pretend to be "public servants" and by magic come out as multi-millionaires.

  2. Could be Tom Donahue sees him as a liability.

    1. I don't think so, he would get re-elected and generally supports Chamber of Commerce positions. I suspect this decision is personal to Ryan.

  3. He's already surprisingly affluent for a man with three children. Handsome home in Janesville. He hasn't any profession apart from politics. Before running for Congress, he had a PR job with FreedomWorks. The only way he makes a great deal of money is by staying in Washington and cashing in. His wife was once a DC lawyer. For a considerable run of years she was at home with the children - in Wisconsin, not DC. As of 2012, she hadn't returned to the workforce. Not sure where she is now. If he's to spend more time with his family, either they're moving to Washington or he's finding work back home. N.B. she never lived in Wisconsin before she married him. The only thing I can see him doing in Wisconsin is lobbying the state legislature or running fitness clubs.

    1. You do not have to be a full time presence in DC to feed at the DC trough. I am sure some of that will be going on.
