Eydie Gorme RIP

I saw the sad news this morning via Wombat, so a RIP and Rule 5 post is warranted:

  1. She really couldn't sing and got where she was because of Steve Lawrence's success, but, as she was part of my yoot OWOTO, it is sad to see her go.

    1. Really? She was not one of my favorites on standards, but she could sing (she is frankly better on the Spanish songs). I liked her and Lawrence as a duet. I would have not gone out of my way to buy tickets to one of their shows, but when they were on tv I did not turn the channel.

  2. Sad news. Steve and Eydie did some of my favorite Christmas duets.

  3. I hate it when she YELLS!!!!. She can sing OK. But the forced vibrato and the YELLING......sheesh. Plus she never seems to be able to actually hit the note and circles in on it. Lot's of very good singers do this, not unusual. Unlike those with perfect pitch like Streisand or Celine Dione who hit the note on pitch or glissando on purpose, Gorme just sounds flat and searching for the notes. I don't have "perfect" pitch like my brother, who can tell you what note you are playing when listening from another room. (He helped me much in my chording and arrangements) But I can tell when someone is just not hitting the mark.

Maybe it is the genre, but I really didn't care for her singing. She was alright. /shrug I like many other artists of that time, but for some reason, I could never understand the enthrallment of Eddie Gorme.

    1. Ella, Sarah V., Julie London classic jazz standard sing...never. Not even close.

OTT broadway torch song singer like Streisand or Dione, nope.

Okay pop singer on the variety show circuit, I give her that.

  4. I'm not saying I LIKE Streisand or Dione. I find them both smarmy in the songs that they sing. BUT.....they have mastery of their instrument. Their vocal chords. Ella F also has supreme control of her abilities. Huge talent and great control of it.

I guess you have to listen without being caught up in emotional tides. Like some of these new internet sensations who are OK, good but not GREAT. Not up to the hype that was giving them flotation devices. Listen with your eyes closed. Listen really deeply.

Susan Boyle. Pretty wonderful Cinderella emotionally powerful story. And YES....she has a very good voice. Far better than many. Far! However, if you listen....really listen....the notes are a bit off and the modulation is not superb. As IF I could ever be superb. I wish!! It is the hype. The ooooh aaaah. You are the best, Eddie... best POP singer evah!. This is what I suppose rubbed me the wrong way.

So even though I despise "My Heart Will Go On" as a song as being so trite it burns.....you have to know that Dion nailed the notes and mastered it as well as a high trapeze artist without a net. Streisand, same thing. Stupid songs. But perfect execution of the events.
