Economic Insecurity? Well this story is a lot of exaggeration...

Four out of 5 U.S. adults struggle with joblessness, near poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives, a sign of deteriorating economic security and an elusive American dream...

Well this image is still true if you live in Detroit...
Are eighty percent (which is what 4 out of 5 means) of Americans jobless, near poverty, or relying of welfare (outside of Detroit of course)?  The qualifier for this bold statement is part of their lives?  So has anyone ever been unemployed or near poverty ever in their lives?  And then they throw in reliance on welfare...so it that unemployment, food stamps, or on the actual dole?  The data backing this up is not defined.  This story is a bunch of hyperbole, which is a polite way to say bullshit.
Back in the good old days of the American Dream...and get some pants on that kid!
Now there is some concern over the lack of real recovery.  I do not deny that.  The economy right now has been limping along for years...but it is not the Great Depression. What people need is economic growth which creates jobs.  What we have is a government more focused on foisting more government on us, which does not address the underlying problem which is a lack of growth.

  2. Technically, the piece is misleading as the article is conditioned on the premise "At some point in their lives...", but it sounds as if we have this right now, particularly for the over-60 crowd.

What is significant is that AP is behind this article and makes it sound as if the Choom Gang has given us conditions worse than the Depression (they have, of course). Given that they have been solidly in the Tank for Choomie, this is quite a slap at him.

Wonder what he did to make AP mad at him.

  3. Right. The "at some point in their lives" statement is extremely misleading. They are counting Social Security as "welfare". If you count that as government assistance rather than a return of premiums paid over their lifetime, then almost EVERYONE over the age of 60 ot 65 is on welfare. Granted there are many who are getting money from Social Security who didn't pay into the program and that would be classified as a government hand out. The issue is that instead of making it a clear and obvious welfare payment, the government is trying to hide how many people are getting something for nothing (illegal immigrants and fake disabled) by robbing the system that others paid into.

Medicare.....as government assistance....don't even get me started! Try and opt OUT of Medicare. I dare you.

  4. You can, but, unless you realize you're automatically enrolled in Medicare, you wouldn't know it and, since Social Security has been living hand-to-mouth since the 60s, technically it is welfare.

FWIW, Insta links to a Walter russell Mead piece that says things are better than we think because we're still measuring the economy in the old smokestack industry manner.

YMMV since we've probably got between 23% and 29% (out there, I know) real unemployment.
