The Grokipedia article was pretty well balanced about a still controversial topic and its eventual fallout. It did, in my opinion miss a key element of John Brown's thinking- that war would be necessary to end slavery. It is not clear that he envisioned a long war between national armies but then no one else (except Winfield Scott) did either including Lincoln and Jefferson Davis. Given that everyone else managed to abolish slavery without war, this seems questionable. He could not have known about Brazil in the 1880s but he would have known about the British and French empires as well as abolition in Northern States.
