Global Shipping and Illicit Trade: Sailors Being Abandoned At Sea

 


Well to be fair, it is not quite Lord Jim, but crews are abandoned (and unpaid) in their last ports. This sort of thing is spiking, as more sanction running is going on. Layers of corporate shells make it unclear who the owners of the ships are and crews are left abandoned unpaid and stuck. This is how Russia and other states get around sanctions.  There has been a skyrocketing of ships like this being abandoned by their owners--leaving the crews unpaid and stuck on the vessels.
