Transgender Romans: Nero and Sporus and the Decline of Civilizations

Nero was married to a woman named Poppaea Sabina. She was pregnant and complained about him spending too much time at the races. Nero in response kicked her violently in the stomach and she died around 65 AD.

Nero had a male slave named Sporus (who apparently looked a bit like Poppaea).  Nero had him castrated and dressed up as a woman. Nero married "her" in 67 AD.

Nero and Sporus (facing a death sentance by the Senate) eventually committed suicide in 68 AD. Rome did not collapse, but did have several years of civil war.

Camille Paglia, a self admittedly feminist leftist lesbian,  recognizes transgenderism and considers herself trans. Paglia criticizes the transgender hysteria, which she points out does not warrant any special rights and should never be pushed on minors.  It has risen before in various cultures. Historically, it is usually a harbringer of their decline. That of course fires up the transgender proponents against Camille Paglia--almost as bad as Nero's reaction to Poppaea.
