Horrible and a lot of this devestation was avoidable. While Turkey does have Western seismic building codes, they are only as good as they are enforced. There is a lot of political corruption around the world, but Turkey and Syria are known for it. Which is why these buildings failed so catastrophically. 7.8 is a big earthquake, but not so big that these building shouldn't have collapsed as they did.
