Giotto: The Lamentation (1304-06)

On the right are Saints Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, who took down the body from the cross. Before them in the pink cloak is Saint John the Evangelist. The various Mary's are posed around the lifeless body, with the Virgin about to kiss the face of Jesus and Saint Mary Magdalene sitting at the feet. On the left are the "daughters of Jerusalem" who went with Jesus on the Way of the Cross. Angels grieve in the sky.
