17 July 1794: The Carmelite Nun Martyrs of Compiègne

 



The nuns did not wear their habits to the guilotine (the Revolutionary "citizens" took those from them, dressing them in civilian clothing). Their martyrdom probably was the last straw, ending the reign of terror. Robespierre himself was sent to the guilitine himself not too long after this.
