Hillbilly Elegy: A Review

'Well acted, if a bit depressing for Thanksgiving. I preferred the novel memoir, but critical panning of this is nonsense. I strongly recommend the novel [autobiography], but tv/movie is ok. What is interesting about the novel is how his grandmother and the Marines saved him. Unlike Williamson's poor white self hatred, J.D. Vance has some hope and optimism. You can't solve poverty without solving substance abuse, be it in rural West Virginia, downtrodden Ohio, or urban America.

  1. Um, it's not a novel. It's an autobiography.

Read the book and saw the movie. The book doesn't pull any punches. The movie is a bit romanticized.
