I doubt this photo was why he got the death penalty, testimony about the crime and victims did that. 

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev crimes were horendous and he deserved the death penalty.

This is one of those: be careful what you wish for (although unless he repents his crimes, hell awaits). While avoiding the death penalty, Tsarnaev will probably spend his remaining days in 23 hour a day lock down.
