Why June 19th? (or Juneteenth)
On June 19, 1862, Lincoln signed legislation prohibiting slavery in federal Territories. On June 19, 1865, the news reached black slaves in Texas of the Emancipation Proclamation (over two years after it went into effect, after Union Troops took control of Galveston, Texas).
