New Amsterdam Incorporated: 2 February 1653

Dutch traders founded and ran New Amsterdam from 1624 to 1664 (when the British took over and renamed it New York). The city was formally incorporated as New Amsterdam on 2 February 1653.

While official Dutch and Netherlands involvement in North America was limited in time--it had a huge impact on American culture. The business of New Amsterdam was always business. The South went more the landed gentry way.  New England flirted with socialism and theocracy. A lot of the culture of economic and individual freedom, limited government involvement, and Protestant work ethic came from those early Dutch colonists.
