It does give some of the back story on Scrooge to explain why he is the way he is. Guy Pearce does a great job in the Scrooge roll. Andy Serkis is the Ghost of Christmas Past. I have always liked A Christmas Carol and like most adaptations of it (I did not like the Disney version which was CGI). I l liked this one. It could have ended up too woke and ruined--but they pulled it off.
My favorite Christmas Carol remains the 2009 version with George C. Scott: Here's Suzanne York
