They are very similar looking. The barred owls came from Canada!
I did not realize that wild life managers in the Pacific Northwest are out in the woods, shooting barred owls to save spotted owls. Then again: "Before he trained to shoot his first barred owl, he had never fired a gun." It is good to learn a skill--why not go shoot nutria or some other noxious invasive species? Apparently we can't have invasive Canadian owls coming south along the border.
That the barred owls are hybridizing with the spotted owls raises another issue: they can't be that different as species. Which just goes to show: Love will find a way.
