Woke Fahrenheit 451 📖📕🔥🗑️🤦🏻‍♀️

I wish I knew what books Melissa Barnett celebrated throwing away.

Instapundit: Ray Bradbury cautioned: there is more than one way to burn a book

This is a depressing report from a parent from a Northeastern school:
When my kids were in middle school, they read Treasure Island, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Pearl, etc. They read parts aloud in class, discussed the books, wrote essays. Now there are no assigned books. Children should be free to choose what they want to read.
So they pick a book off the shelf and sit in class and “read” it. Diary of a Wimpy Kid is popular. There is no discussion because every kid is “reading” a different book. Most kids don’t read. They are on their phones or goofing around. Class time is used to read because no one reads at home. Are we in the ‘hood?

An English teacher at the HS told me they no longer have freshman in regular classes (non-honors) write essays. The kids writing skills are not good enough, so they just focus on writing an intro paragraph.

For the entire year.

Sorry to go full Godwin on this, but this is how you actively create ignorance. Ms Barnett seems more concerned with giving kids woke thoughts than teaching about love of literature and learning.

That is exactly what the Nazis were all about too (the Soviets also). I do not like opposing school districts burning or throwing away books they disagree with (be it logging towns throwing out the Lorax or school districts trashing The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn).

Here are some lists of 100 top books. I encourage kids to read everything. The more the better. That is how you learn. These lists are not universal--but I have read many of them and this is an excellent way to start. We need to stop worrying about protecting everyone's feelings and encourage people to read more.
