Hernán Cortés captures Tenochtitlán (Mexico City) on August 13, 1521
Instapundit: Cortez and the Liberation of Mexico
The Aztecs (Aztec was derivative of Atzlan, where they originated from in what is now Northern Mexico, they were also called the Tenochca and Mexica) were hated by the other native people near them, due to the harshness of Aztec/Tenochca/Mexica rule and the sacrifices of captives at the temples and pyramids.
The Spanish used that animosity to their advantage in overthrowing the Aztecs. The Tlaxcala (a near by group often attacked and sacrificed by the Aztecs) converted to Christianity when the Spanish came and provided 250,000 warriors for the siege and conquest of Tenochtitlán.
