Palo Duro Canyon and the surrounding area is not well known outside of Texas but it is a rugged natural region located in the Texas Panhandle (and is the second largest canyon in the United States). It was the strong hold of the Comanche, Southern Cheyenne, and Kiowa. They used it as a refuge to stage raids across Texas, Colorado, and Kansas from, where they held out until they were eventually forced onto the reservation and Indian Territory (Oklahoma) in 1875.
Not being a national park, it does not get the attention that other areas of the West get. Still it is fascinating mix of history, nature, and geology.
