Roanoke Colony: July 22, 1587

Today is the 432nd aniversary of the founding of the Roanoke Colony off of North Carolina.

Stories of lost colonies, under mysterious circumstances, always spark the imagination. Unfortunately due to political events in Europe, resupply of the Roanoke Colony did not happen until 1590. When that ship arived, the colony was gone.  Just an inscrition of "Croatoan" was found on a post.

It is not that much of a mystery though. It is high probable that what happened to the Roanoke Colony was it's people faced starvation and disease (it took a while for English colonists to adapt to the new climate of North America at Plymouth and Jamestown too). In a weakened state the colonists were either attacked by a neighboring tribe (because they had valuable things such as metal) or just surrendered to them out of despiration. Its members ended up being killed or held as captives (assimilating with the tribe).
